Our history

Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Glantaf was opened in September 1978 with 99 pupils on roll. Mr J.E. Malcolm Thomas, its first head was assisted by a team of 10 teachers who divided their time between the new Welsh Medium school and its English counterpart on the same site.

The school increased in numbers to such an extent that in September 1986 the lower school (Years 7 and 8 ) was moved to the old Cantonian High School site at Waterhall, Fairwater under the leadership of Mrs Marian Wynne. Another important development during this period was the establishment of a Special Resource Base at the school. Yet another change occurred in 1998, when the school, once again, occupied the main site on the banks of the Taf in Llandaff North. Ysgol Gyfun Gymrag Plasmawr was then opened on the lower school site receiving a number of pupils from years 7 and 8.

In the summer of 1995 Mr Malcom Thomas retired and Mr Huw Thomas joined us from Ysgol Gyfun Cwm Rhymni. During this time, the buildings were expanded, a new Science block and, later a performing arts base being added

Mr Huw Thomas retired in the summer of 2003 and Mrs Rhiannon Lloyd, a former Schools Inspector was appointed as Head serving the school until her retirement in 2010.

She was succeeded by Mr Alun Davies, former head at Ysgol Gyfun Rhydywaun. In 2012 the city's third Welsh Medium Comprehensive School - Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Bro Edern, was established, sharing the Glantaf site for a year before moving to the former St Teilo's High school site to cater for pupils from the eastern area of the city. Further expansion of our site and its resources continued and included a full size astro turf pitch, an excellent sports hall, a fitness suite and a new block for Mathematics, Science and the sixth form. The Special Resource Base has gone from strength to strength and now also admits pupils from outside the County because of the special care and unique Welsh medium provision provided

The current Head, Mr Matthew Evans, was appointed on Mr Davies’s retirement in Sept 2020.  Mr Evans, is former Head of Ysgol Gymraeg Ystayfera – Bro Dur in Neath Port Talbot.  The school catchment has developed over the past few years and now includes the communities of Ysgolion Cynradd Cymraeg Hamadryad, Pwll coch, Mynydd Bychan, Glan Ceubal, Pencae, Melin Gruffydd and Y Wern.  The school has strong partnership links with these schools as well as a successful partnership with both Ysgol Bro Edern and Plasmawr through our KS5 joint delivery of BroPlasTaf.
